DRF Breeding Standout: Uno Duo

Juddmonte Farms homebred Uno Duo uncorked a visually impressive performance in her second career start, romping to a 5 1/4-length win in a six-furlong maiden special weight event on May 12 at Churchill Downs.

The 3-year-old daughter of Adena Springs stallion Macho Uno covered the distance in 1:10.22 on a track rated fast. She received a 74 Beyer Speed Figure for her effort, improving on a third-place effort at Tampa Bay Downs in her debut on April 13, for which she earned a 57 Beyer. The filly raced from off the pace in her first try, and entered Sunday’s event following two leisurely workouts at Churchill for trainer Bill Mott. This time Uno Duo displayed impressive early speed as well as maturity on the racetrack, as she set the pace and drew off eagerly in early stretch to win going away.

Uno Duo is out of the winning Nureyev mare Willstar. The filly has ample turf influence on her female side, as she is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Etoile Montante. Etoile Montante is the dam of Starformer, a multiple Grade 3 winner on the turf. Uno Duo is also a half-sister to stakes-placed Starfan, the dam of Group 3 winner Glaswegian, and to three other mares who have produced stakes horses on grass.

Other notable family members include include European champion Special Duty, multiple Grade 1 winners Sightseek and Tates Creek, and Grade 2 winners and sires Pollard’s Vision and Bowman’s Band.

Macho Uno, champion 2-year-old male in 2000, stands for $20,000 this year at Adena's Kentucky facility. The 15-year-old Holy Bull horse, a half-brother to elite Adena stallion Awesome Again, is the sire of runners such as Grade 1 winner Macho Again and multiple graded stakes winner Mucho Macho Man, last year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic runner-up.
