Downpour boosts Sara's Success

Sara's Success, with apprentice rider Eddie Castro aboard, wins the $100,000 Aspidistra Handicap at Calder Race Course on Saturday.

MIAMI - The complexion of Saturday's $100,000 Aspidistra Handicap at Calder changed dramatically less than two hours before post time when a sudden downpour forced the race to be switched from the turf to a sloppy main track. The change in venue played right into the hands of the versatile Sara's Success, who rallied to a 1 3/4-length victory over Redoubled Miss in a scratch-reduced field of older fillies and mares.

Sara's Success had to steady from tight quarters around the clubhouse turn, advanced to close contention while three wide into the far turn, and readily overtook the tiring Chit Chatter in early stretch before gradually edging clear. Redoubled Miss rallied mildly near the inside to finish second, a half-length before the tiring Chit Chatter.

Sara's Success returned $11.20 after covering a mile in 1:40.02 and gave apprentice Eddie Castro Jr. his fourth win of the day. A daughter of Concorde's Tune, Sara's Success is trained by Eddie Plesa Jr. for the Thorobeam Farm.
