Sunshine Beach was an easy winner in 1:50 3/5 at Dover on Sunday.

The $284,160 Progress Pace at Dover Downs on Sunday looked like a one-horse race on paper and played out that exact way on the track. Sunshine Beach had few anxious moments in an easy victory over seven others.

Sunshine Beach left and waited for the dust to settle before making his way to the front around the three-eighths marker. Emeritus Maximus, who wrestled the early lead from Dedi’s Dragon after an opening quarter of 26 3/5, yielded back into the pocket and was content to follow the favorite.

With Sunshine Beach putting the half on the board in 54 2/5, he began to feel some mild pressure from Wake Up Peter. The field was stacked up with four competitors inside and outside by three quarters in 1:22 3/5 when Sunshine Beach turned on the afterburners and waved goodbye to the field.

Sunshine Beach would cross the wire in 1:50 3/5, ahead of longshot Clint Westwood, who swung four-wide on the final turn and finished fast for second. Dedi’s Dragon came up the pylons for third.

“He’s a really top horse. To overcome the eight-hole here is hard to do,” said driver John Campbell. “I was able to rate him down the backstretch and he finished up very strong.”

Sunshine Beach, who paid $3.20 to win, scored for the eighth time in 20 starts this year. He has now earned $909,283 under the care of trainer Mark Steacy for owners Hudson Standardbred Stable, Conrad Leber and Diane Bertrand.
