Doug Atkins, horseman, dead at 76


Doug Atkins, a longtime racing executive and horsemen, died on Nov. 29 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 76.

Atkins was involved in several aspects of racing, working as a publicity director at Sunland Park in the 1960's. In 1967, he began a 20-year association with the Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association in California, working as secretary-treasurer and later as chief operating officer.

Following his retirement in 1987, Atkins continued his involvement with racing as an owner and breeder. In partnerships, he raced and bred such stakes winners as Baldomero, Shirkee, Fine 'n Majestic, Taisez Vous, and Evil's Pic.

A memorial service is scheduled for noon Saturday at Village Church, 6225 Paseo Delicias, Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

Atkins is survived by his wife, Lee, two daughters, and five grandchildren.
