Dortmund remained unbeaten in three starts in the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity in December. He kicks off his 3-year-old season in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes on Saturday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Dortmund, the unbeaten winner of the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Futurity in December, worked a half-mile in 47.60 seconds Tuesday. Dortmund will be favored in his 3-year-old debut, the $150,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on Saturday.

Trainer Bob Baffert said he timed Dortmund in 47.80 seconds. Owned by Kaleem Shah, Dortmund has made three starts.

“He went really well,” Baffert said. “He was just cruising around there. He looked good. He’s ready.”

The Lewis is expected to have a field of five or six. The probable starters include Firing Line, the runner-up in the Los Alamitos Futurity; Rock Shandy and Hero Ten All, who were second and sixth in the Grade 3 Sham Stakes here Jan. 10; Tizcano, fifth in the Spectacular Bid Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 3; and possibly the maiden-race winner Punctuate.

This race will be a match race between Dortmund and Firing Line in the stretch. This will be a great race. No matter who beats who, here's hoping they both come out of the race healthy.

Firing Line gets the win this time at even money. Dorkmund runs second at 3/5. Great betting race.

Great betting race? I hope that was sarcasm.

Russell, just curious...why do you say that? I thought Texas Red ran a great race the other day. Kent made a bad decision and went to the inside and he lost to a very good Lord Nelson but, don't you think Texas Red is better going 2 turns and long? I don't know who I like this early for the Derby...but, from where I sit, if he stays healthy, Texas Red is indeed a Derby horse.

Kent did not make a wrong decision. The horse was merely short and ran as well as he did because of his pure class. Watch the rerun and you will notice Texas Red fin out on top. he was beat by a very sharp Baffert horse . It's a rare occasion that Baffert ever puts his horse in a race short on preparation. Love him, hate him , he is a master trainer.

Dortmund looks good. He'll have to reassure that he isn't prone to flatten out in the stretch, and that he's able to continue to grow into his frame and get stronger. It's scary to consider his potential in an optimistic light.

IMHO, the beloved Kentucky derby tends to be a bumper car race, so why don't we focus on the Preakness and the Belmont which tend to be formful. When they eventually reduce the Kentucky Derby field to say 18, then we'll start to see races like the Preakness take place.
gary Potter More than 1 year ago
18? dropping two horses is going to stop it from being bumper cars? The Preakness is limited to 14 horses.

O lord. I tried.

The Belmont formful? Since when? You are talking about a race Drosselmeyer won looking like Secretariat.
Ray Sousa More than 1 year ago
Nonsense the derby has been the most form full race around. which is why the winner wins the Preakness as the favorite more often than not. ORB was a favorite. ANIMAL KINGDOM and ILL HAVE ANOTHER were easily the top 3 yos of their crop despite their derby odds. CALIFORNIA CHROME was the best horse in the field last year.BIG BROWN,BARBARO,STREET SENSE,SMARTY JONES where all very predictable.so I've mentioned 8 horses who where logical winners and that just in the last 11 years.so in that period you had 3 illogical or harder to pick horses mud lark SUPER SAVER (Calvin borel) and MINE THAT BIRD (Calvin borel) in the mud. And GIACOMO (Mike smith)..if you listen to some people you would think we have had freaky results on a regular basis.not true at all.

Dortmund will only improve as he gets older and more experienced. Not to mention as the distances get longer. He had a horrible trip last time. Way wide the entire race. I think Dortmund wins again and keeps improving. Immense talent just waiting to come out.

Dortmund had a absolute perfect trip off the duel of Firing Line and the Lukas horse. Which race were you watching? intentionally racing outside with a perfect trip--you, sir, are clueless
