Dominguez stablemates run one-two again

The 3-year-old filly division at Sunland Park is apparently completely dominated by trainer Henry Dominguez. A few weeks after sweeping the top three spots in the El Paso Times Handicap, his R Charlie's Angel and Snake Proof dominated the proceedings in Sunday's $50,000 Island Fashion Stakes.

R Charlies Angel, owned Chris Coleman, was third behind Snake Proof in the El Paso Times, a sprint. In the Island Fashion, at a mile, R Charlies Angel ($14) chased pacesetter Magandalooker through modest splits and then blasted the race wide open with a strong move on the far turn that swept her three lengths clear. She opened up four in midstretch and cruised home 2 1/2 lengths in front under Jorge Bourdieu.

Her stablemate, Snake Proof, who won the El Paso Times, put in another good late run, rallying from seventh in the field of eight 3-year-old fillies to get second. She was no match the winner but finished 4 1/2 lengths ahead of Magandalooker, who ran third. Catera, the 2-1 favorite, ran evenly thoughout and finished fourth.

R Charlies Angel covered the distance in 1:38.68. The winner's share of $30,000 pushed her career earnings to $124,094 from 5 wins in 9 starts.

R Charlies Angel will be pointed to the meet's top event for her division, the $200,000 WinStar Sunland Park Oaks March 16. Snake Proof may go there as well.
