Dominguez planning to return from injury next Friday at Aqueduct

Email

Jockey Ramon Dominguez, injured in an accident at Aqueduct on March 18, is planning to return to action next Friday, April 6, one day before the Grade 1, $1 million Wood Memorial at Aqueduct, his agent, Steve Rushing, said Friday.

Rushing said Dominguez was to be named on horses for the April 6 card when entries for that day were taken Saturday morning. Dominguez had wanted to return by April 7 in order to ride in the Wood. He is scheduled to ride Alpha in that race, assuming there is no last-minute change of plans with Hansen, who is scheduled to run on April 14 in the Grade 1, $1 million Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland. Dominguez rides both horses.

Dominguez has a number of top mounts right now. In addition to Alpha and Hansen, he is the regular rider for Havre de Grace, the 2011 Horse of the Year. Dominguez, 35, has won the Eclipse Award as champion jockey the past two years.

Dominguez separated his collarbone when his mount, Mob Wife, stumbled and fell in deep stretch of the eighth race at Aqueduct on March 18. Assuming he has no setback this coming week, he will be back in action less than three weeks after that accident.
