Dixietwostepper goes up ladder in sprint

CALGARY, Alberta - Dixietwostepper steps up a notch in a third-level allowance on Friday at Stampede Park. Winner of a second-level allowance last out, Dixietwostepper has five filly-mare rivals in the six-furlong sprint, which runs as the eighth of nine races on the card.

The evening kicks off with the $25,000 Stampede Park Classic, a 220-yard Quarter Horse stakes that drew a full field of 10, including a three-horse entry from trainer Bill Brigden's stable.

Dixietwostepper was visually impressive in a 3 3/4-length victory on April 14, covering the six furlongs in a rapid 1:10.80. She rated kindly from just off the pace and finished full of run.

Dixietwostepper on Friday retains the services of Quincy Welch, who regained the lead in the jockey standings from Rickey Walcott last weekend.

Regal Magi returns one week after opening up a clear lead and finishing sixth versus perhaps a tougher bunch, and looms the one to catch under Perry Winters.

Regal Magi's trainer, Don Gilkyson, has been on a bit of roll, going along at a 25 percent win clip.

L'il Trooper, who tested stakes fillies last fall, drew the rail and rates a look at a price after running evenly in her opener here on April 7. L'il Trooper, 4, ran into a tough one in repeat winner Sassy Sarah.

She's Twenty Below, a deep closer, and O My Dear, making her seasonal debut, round out the field.
