Dixie Meister best in Texas

Dixie Meister, who last weekend won the Grade 2 San Pasqual Handicap at Santa Anita, has been named the 2006 Texas-bred of the year by the Texas Thoroughbred Association. He will be honored during the organization's annual meeting in Austin, Texas, on Jan. 19-20.

Dixie Meister's biggest win last year came in the Grade 2 Californian at Hollywood Park. He races for Gary Tanaka and is a 5-year-old by Holzmeister. Dixie Meister was bred in Texas by Ken and Linda Quirk.

Wrenice, who won five consecutive races by more than 40 lengths, was named champion 2-year-old filly. She earned $244,346 in her first year of racing, which is a record for a Texas-bred juvenile filly, according to the TTA. The champion 2-year-old colt was Datrick, winner of the Grade 3 Kentucky Breeders' Cup.

Other divisional Texas-bred winners were Upstream, champion 3-year-old; Open Meadows, champion 3-year-old filly; I.B.'s Halo, champion older filly or mare; and Dixity Do Dah, the dam of Dixie Meister, who was named broodmare of the year.
