Proven sires are in good number in the short field for Saturday’s Preakness Stakes, including Distorted Humor and Curlin, each seeking his third classics winner. Distorted Humor, who stands at WinStar Farm, got his stud career off to a flying start with first-crop champion Funny Cide, who won the 2003 Kentucky Derby and Preakness before finishing third in the Belmont Stakes in his Triple Crown attempt. Distorted Humor was later represented by 2010 Belmont winner Drosselmeyer, who went on to add the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Classic. The stallion takes his shot on Saturday at a third classic winner with Tampa Bay Derby winner Quip, who bypassed the Kentucky Derby to await the Preakness. :: Visit DRF's one-stop shop for Black-Eyed Susan and Preakness PPs, guides, and more! Curlin, who won the 2007 Preakness, kept alive a remarkable streak when Good Magic finished second in the Kentucky Derby, as he has now produced a classic winner or classic-placed runner from each of his first six crops to race. The Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm stallion began with 2013 Belmont winner Palace Malice in his first crop. Curlin was then represented by Ride On Curlin, the 2014 Preakness runner-up, and Keen Ice, third to American Pharoah in the 2015 Belmont. Exaggerator finished second in the Kentucky Derby before winning the 2016 Preakness, and Irish War Cry was second in last year’s Belmont. In addition to Good Magic, who returns for the Preakness, Curlin has a second shot at this edition with Triple Crown newcomer Tenfold. Other proven classics sires represented in this Preakness include the late Scat Daddy, whose son Justify gave him a breakthrough victory in the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago, and Tiznow, who sired 2008 upset Belmont winner Da’ Tara and now has Sporting Chance in the Preakness. :: View a list of resources and content related to the 2018 Preakness
