Disfunction up late in Cartier

Disfunction ($8.50) overtook the leaders in deep stretch to capture the $158,850 Jacques Cartier Stakes at Woodbine on Saturday.

Disfunction, normally a front-runner, followed Stradivinsky through an opening quarter-mile in 22.46 seconds, before dropping back to fifth on the turn. Jockey Emile Ramsammy angled Disfunction wide exiting the turn, and he edged by Field Commission and Shadowless late to prevail by a neck, in a time of 1:08.62 for the six furlongs.

Shadowless wound up a neck in front of Field Commission, and Timely Advice rallied to finish a close fourth. Favored Legal Move was fifth in the eight-horse field.

"When I saw him drop back, I thought something happened to him," said Julia Carey, who trains Disfunction. "Breaking from the one hole, I thought he had no other choice but to be up front, but Emile did a masterful job."

Disfunction banked $90,000 for the partnership of JMJ's Stable and Weila Ye.

* Awesome Rhythm overcame a dawdling pace to take Saturday's $100,000 Wando Stakes by four lengths over favored Bear's Rocket. Shafted finished a distant third in the 1 1/16-mile route for 3-year-olds, which was run in a time of 1:45.49.

Awesome Rhythm, ridden by Jim McAleney for trainer John Ross, returned $25.60 as the longest shot in the five-horse field.
