ELMONT, N.Y. – Frank Generazio has a decision to make. Generazio, who owns Disco Partner with his wife Patricia, watched their New York-bred son of Disco Rico roll to a 1 1/4-length victory in Saturday’s $150,000 Belmont Turf Sprint Invitational. While the race serves as a stepping-stone to the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, Disco Partner is not Breeders’ Cup nominated. It would cost the Generazios $100,000 to make him eligible for the five-furlong turf race on Nov. 4. “We’re thinking about it,” Frank Generazio said by phone from Cape Cod where he watched the race on television. “We’ll decide in the next couple of days. I don’t know what we’re going to do.” The Generazios also own Pure Sensation who is Breeders’ Cup nominated and is training up to the Turf Sprint following his victory in the Turf Monster last month at Parx. Last fall, Pure Sensation finished third in the Breeders’ Turf Sprint following a victory in the inaugural Belmont Turf Sprint Invitational. Generazio said if he didn’t own Pure Sensation “I’d definitely supplement” Disco Partner. Saturday, Disco Partner ($2.70) won for the fourth time in five starts this year. In June, he set what is believed to be a world record by winning the Grade 3 Jaipur in 1:05.67 for six furlongs over Belmont’s inner turf course. His final time for Saturday’s Belmont Turf Sprint over the outer turf course was 1:06.97 just .10 off the course record set by Gantry six years ago. Disco Partner’s only loss this year came in the Grade 1 Fourstardave at Saratoga when he finished fourth, 8 3/4 lengths behind World Approval. It rained early that day, making the turf course yielding, ground Disco Partner didn’t handle. Saturday, the Belmont turf course was firm. Under Irad Ortiz Jr., Disco Partner sat fourth, 2 1/2 lengths off the pace established by Bold Thunder, who ran a quarter in 22.06 seconds and a half-mile in 44.59. Ortiz was more concerned with We Deer You, who was behind him, than the three who were ahead of him. Approaching the top of the stretch, Ortiz guided Disco Partner three wide and he easily overtook Bold Thunder and outfinished Ready for Rye to the wire. Ready for Rye finished second by a neck over Snowday who was a neck in front of We Deer You. Bold Thunder was last of five. “I tried to wait as long as I could, try not to move too early and have [We Deer You] get me at the end,” Ortiz said. “He gave me a good kick.” Said trainer Christophe Clement: “Irad was playing with them. It’s a very good race. The way he did it was wonderful. Let’s go on to better things.” Clement said he would have no problem taking both Disco Partner and Pure Sensation to the Breeders’ Cup, but said the Generazios will make the decision regarding Disco Partner. “It’s up to Mr. and Mrs. Generazio, they know the horses very well, it’s their money they should make that decision,” Clement said. Clement said it would be a no-brainer if the Breeders’ Cup were held at Belmont Park, where it hasn’t been since 2005. “Maybe one day NYRA will have the Breeders’ Cup back here,” Clement said. “All the New York horsemen can’t wait to see it back here.”
