'Dewey' wins Hambletonian

Deweycheatumnhowe won the $1.5 million Hambletonian on Saturday, becoming the first unbeaten winner of the 3-year-old trotting classic at the Meadowlands Racetrack.

Deweycheatumnhowe extended his winning streak to 15 with a half-length victory over Crazed, with Make It Happen third.

The time for the mile on the good track was 1:52.

Driven by co-owner and trainer Ray Schnittker, Deweycheatumnhowe paid $2.80 to win as the 2-5 favorite in the field of 10.

From the rail, Deweycheatumnhowe took charge early on the first turn and led the rest of the way. Crazed, the 7-2 second choice, offered the only meaningful challenge in the lane, but Deweycheatumnhowe would not yield.

"The trip was getting to him and I got into him pretty good," Schnittker said. "He refused to let the other horse get by. He's one helluva horse."

Make It Happen, also trained by Schnittker, was third, followed by Celebrity Secret, Clerk Magistrate, Velocity Hall, Big Apple Deli, Kajan Kooker, Atomic Hall, and Pine After Pine.
