'Dewey' heads Hambletonian

Deweycheatumnhowe - the undefeated trotter, not the crooked law firm - headlines the $1.5 million Hambletonian for 3-year-olds Saturday at the Meadowlands Racetrack.

Once again, the two biggest races in New Jersey will be linked by a cross-breed wager: a daily double on the Hambletonian and the $1 million Haskell Invitational Sunday at Monmouth Park.

Deweycheatumnhowe could make history as the first unbeaten horse to capture harness racing's biggest prize. He has won 14 straight, including a 6 1/4-length romp in last week's eliminations. He is the 2-5 favorite from the rail in the 10-horse field with trainer and co-owner Ray Schnittker set to drive.

Deweycheatumnhowe is clearly a horse for the Meadowlands course, where he has already rung up 10 wins.

This is Schnittker's best shot to capture a Hambletonian, having twice finished third with a pair of 40-1 shots: Armbro Plato (1997) and Armbro Trick (2000).

Crazed was installed the 5-1 second choice after cruising to a career-best win in last week's eliminations. He has post 2 with Tim Tetrick in the sulky.

Atomic Hall, a 22-1 winner in the other Hambletonian elimination, has post 3 with Eric Goodell driving. He is 10-1 on the morning line to pull off a repeat upset.

Post time for the Hambletonian is 2:43 p.m. Eastern with live coverage on NBC.
