Devine, vet to Kelso, dead at 78

Ed Devine, a longtime veterinarian in the Mid-Atlantic region, died Wednesday at age 78 in New Jersey, according to his son, Ed Devine Jr. The cause of a death was complications from a heart arrhythmia, Devine Jr. said.

Devine worked for 47 years in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and other Mid-Atlantic states. Over the years, he worked with such prominent turf families as the DuPonts and treated Hall of Fame horses such as Kelso and Spectacular Bid.

Devine had been working in recent years on a new treatment for bucked shins.
