Deuces run wild for $48,750 payout

It might be called the Magna 5, but deuces were wild in the national wager on Saturday when the winners of the final four races, including two favorites, all wore saddle cloth number two.

The winning numbers were 3-2-2/6-2-2/6. In both the third and fifth legs, the favorite won, so scratched horses, in both cases number six, reverted to the starting favorite.

Those with that winning hand received $48,750. There were eight winning tickets. The total pool was $486,670, which was short of the guaranteed minimum of $500,000. That is the second time in eight weeks that the guaranteed minimum has not been reached, and the first time since the first week the wager was offered. When the guarantee is not reached, Magna Entertainment must make up the difference.

Sutter Street ($38.80) caused the day's biggest upset when he rallied from far back to catch favored Oro Desert in the second leg, the fifth at Santa Anita.

Golden Gate Fields was the site, per usual in the Magna 5, of another longshot winner when Royal Again ($26.60) won that track's fifth race, the fourth leg in the sequence.

The other winners were Marthamountainmama ($9.20) at Laurel, plus Shakespeare ($5.60) in the Caltech Stakes and Humor Me Molly ($5.80), both at Gulfstream.
