Desormeaux to ride Whatsthescript

Kent Desormeaux will have the mount on Whatsthescript in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Mile on Nov. 7, trainer John Sadler said Thursday.

Desormeaux will be aboard Whatsthescript for the first time in the BC Mile. Whatsthescript, 5, is winless in four mounts this year, all major turf stakes in Southern California. Joel Rosario was aboard for those races, which included third-place finishes in the Grade 1 Eddie Read Stakes at Del Mar on July 25 and the Grade 2 Oak Tree Mile here on Oct. 10.

"We're going to go with Kent Desormeaux," Sadler said. "I think he's in great form this year. He's been riding fantastic. He's no stranger to big races."

Sadler reached the decision after conferring with Tom Stull, whose Tommy Town Thoroughbreds owns Whatsthescript.

Through Tuesday, Desormeaux, 39, was fourth in the nation by earnings with more than $11.5 million. Ramon Dominguez led all riders with more than $15.3 million.

There were 14 horses pre-entered for the Mile, but the race is not expected to have more than 12 starters. Awesome Gem and Colonel John were also pre-entered for the BC Classic on Nov. 7, and are intended starters for that race, their respective trainers said on Thursday.

The race is led by defending champion Goldikova, a 4-year-old filly based in France with trainer Freddy Head. Goldikova has the respect of Sadler, whose Whatsthescript lost the Mile by 3 3/4 lengths last year. Goldikova and Whatsthescript are the only pre-entrants in the 2009 field who ran in the 2008 Mile.

"It's a hard race," Sadler said. "How do you beat Goldikova? We know the race she ran on this course last year was silly."
