Derby trophies moved for cleanup

About 80 valuable trophies, including several Kentucky Derby Gold Cups, were in the process of being moved Wednesday to a Churchill Downs vault to avert possible damage during the massive cleanup that has been undertaken at the Kentucky Derby Museum in the wake of the Aug. 4 flash flood in Louisville, Ky.

Museum officials said the trophy collection includes Derby gold cups won by Flying Ebony (1925), Determine (1954), and Carry Back (1960), along with numerous other gold and silver pieces that are part of the museum's extensive collection.

Some remaining trophies were unaffected by the flood and will remain in the museum, which incurred an estimated $4 million in damage and is closed indefinitely to the public.

Information about the cleanup effort will be regularly updated on derbymuseum.org.
