Caracortado is one of 10 new names among the betting interests in Pool 2 of the future bet.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Ten new names are in the lineup of 23 separately listed wagering interests in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, which opens Friday at noon Eastern at racetracks and wagering outlets throughout North America.

New horses for Pool 2 include Caracortado and Nextdoorneighbor, the first two Derby contenders that Southern California-based Mike Machowsky has ever trained.

"I kind of feel like I'm on top of the world right now, having a couple of horses good enough to be on the future wager list," Machowsky said. "Both are really nice horses, and it'd be great to get them both there to Kentucky. It's a great spot to be in right now."

The other new Pool 2 horses are Connemara, D' Funnybone, Discreetly Mine, Odysseus, Radiohead, Setsuko, Sidney's Candy, and Tempted to Tapit.

:: PAST PERFORMANCES:

The displaced horses from Pool 1, which ran Feb. 12-14, are Concord Point, Drosselmeyer, Dryfly, Make Music for Me, Maximus Ruler, Ron the Greek, Stay Put, Tiz Chrome, Uptowncharlybrown, and William's Kitten.

Six of the 23 horses listed in Pool 2 are trained by Todd Pletcher: Aikenite, Connemara, Discreetly Mine, Eskendereya, Rule, and Super Saver.

The mutuel field, the 24th or "all others" option, closed at 3-2 in Pool 1, marking the 12th time in as many years that the field has been favored in the opening pool. For Pool 2, Churchill Downs linemaker Mike Battaglia has listed the field as a lukewarm 7-2 favorite, followed by Eskendereya and Lookin At Lucky as co-second choices at 6-1.

Derby Pool 2 will coincide with the only Kentucky Oaks futures available this year. For the Oaks, Battaglia also listed the field as a lukewarm favorite (4-1) over the 23 separately listed fillies, with Blind Luck the 5-1 second choice and Amen Hallelujah next at 6-1.

Exacta wagering once again is available on Derby Pool 2, but only win wagering is offered on the Oaks pool, which typically has attracted about 15 percent of the handle that a Derby pool gets during the same period.

Both the win and exacta pools are $2 minimums, although a $1 exacta box or part-wheel wager can be made. No exactas using the 24-24 combination (field-field) are sold. In the case of field horses eventually occupying the top spots, the separately listed horse finishing highest will complete the exacta for the purposes of that pool.

The Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct and the Sham Stakes at Santa Anita are the only Derby preps scheduled for this weekend; both will be run Saturday, well before odds are locked in. The Derby pool closes Sunday at 6 p.m. Eastern, 30 minutes before the Oaks pool closes. Typically, about half of the handle for a Derby futures pool is wagered on Sundays.

Historically, Pool 2 draws the lowest handle among the three pools offered annually. Even with exactas being offered for the first time in futures history, the 2009 Pool 2 combined handle was $325,206, fourth-lowest for a Pool 2 and well off the record of $511,655 in 2005.

For 2010 Pool 1, Churchill reduced the wagering window from four days to three by eliminating Thursdays for the first time since the track began offering parimutuel futures in 1999. Combined handle was $466,048 on Pool 1, fourth-lowest in 12 years and a decrease of 3 percent from 2009, when only win wagering was still offered.

Pool 3 is set for March 26-28.

Lineups for all future wagers are chosen by John Asher of Churchill Downs and Brad Free and Mike Watchmaker of Daily Racing Form.

Win odds and exacta will-pays are available on selected monitors at tracks and wagering outlets where futures are offered as well as on kentuckyderby.com.

The 136th Derby will be run May 1.
