Dennis Moore takes over Del Mar track maintenance job

ARCADIA, Calif. – Dennis Moore, the track superintendent at Santa Anita, has been named the director of track maintenance at Del Mar, the track announced on Thursday.

Moore, 67, is also a consultant on track maintenance at Los Alamitos. Thursday’s announcement means Moore will oversee the condition of all three dirt tracks in Southern California.

“We’ll try to keep the same maintenance on all three tracks,” Moore said Thursday.

“We want to keep that uniformity. That way, there is not a big transition from Santa Anita to Del Mar or Los Alamitos to Del Mar. We want it to be as consistent as we can.”

Moore said he can handle overseeing three venues simultaneously.

“You put in a lot of hours with not many days off,” he said.

Moore said he plans to meet with Del Mar officials to discuss maintenance plans for the track’s two race meetings this year – a summer meeting July 19 to Sept. 4 and the autumn meeting Nov. 1-26. The Breeders’ Cup will be held at Del Mar on Nov. 3-4.

This will be the first time Moore has worked on a full-time basis at Del Mar, he said. Moore has a long history of building and maintaining racetracks throughout the world, particularly in Southern California.

Steven Wood Jr., the track superintendent at Del Mar in 2016, will join Moore’s track maintenance crew, the track said in a statement.
