Delta: Top Cat Boogie, Flirty Fitz surprise in Pelican, Azelea for Louisiana-breds


Top Cat Boogie and Flirty Fitz pulled off stakes upsets Saturday night at Delta Downs, with Top Cat Boogie returning $20.80 for his win in the $75,000 Pelican, and Flirty Fitz paying $39.60 after taking the $75,000 Azalea. Both races were restricted to 3-year-olds bred in Louisiana.

Top Cat Boogie was on deck first, edging Courtesy Cat by a head in a spirited battle to the wire in the Pelican. It was another 3 1/4 lengths back in third to Hurricane Bluff. Top Cat Boogie raced close throughout, and covered five furlongs on a fast track in 57.95 seconds. Randall Toups rode the winner for Paul Stroderd and trainer Alan Klanfer. Top Cat Boogie has now won 3 of 7 starts and $125,698.

Flirty Fitz rallied five wide to win the Azalea by 2 1/2 lengths over Miss Stone Express. She  ran five furlongs in 59.78. Jansen Melancon was aboard for Darlene Wahman and trainer Ronnie Ward. Flirty Fitz has now won 2 of 10 starts and $93,104.
