Delta Downs: Guadalupe High stays perfect over track

Guadalupe High remained perfect at Delta Downs on Friday night, when she comfortably held off a bid from favorite Little Ms Protocol for a 1 1/2-length win in the $100,000 Magnolia. Guadalupe High is now 3 for 3 at the Vinton, La., track, with all of her local wins coming in stakes. She invaded from Churchill Downs for the Magnolia, a one-mile race for fillies and mares bred in Louisiana.

Guadalupe High ($7.80) stalked the pace set by Mischievous Mama, who was up by two lengths through an opening quarter in 23.28 seconds. Mischievous Mama continued to be in control of the race through a half-mile in 48.89 and six furlongs in 1:13.89. Guadalupe High overtook the leader from there, and went on to cover the distance on a fast track in 1:39.78.

Gerard Melancon rode the winner for trainer Ronny Werner and his partners in the horse, Rick Broth, Helen Burnett, and Kenneth Posey.

Melancon has now won all three stakes races run at the young Delta meet. His mount, Synapse, was placed first  in the $150,000 My Trusty Cat last weekend following the disqualification of Bahnah, and a day later he took the $200,000 Jean Lafitte aboard Rise Up.

Guadalupe High is a 3-year-old daughter of Cuvee who was bred by Janeen Oliver. She came into the Magnolia off a sixth-place finish in the Grade 3 Dogwood at Churchill. Guadalupe High earned $60,000 for her win in the Magnolia, which was her sixth career victory from 12 starts. Her other wins at Delta came this past spring, in the $125,000 Premiere Starlet in February and the $75,000 Azalea in March.
