Delta Downs: Fifth stakes for 'Nitro'

Nitro Chip wins the $50,000 Cypress for Louisiana-breds at Delta Downs on Friday.

Nitro Chip won the fifth stakes of his career Friday night, when he dominated a solid field in the $50,000 Cypress for Louisiana-breds at Delta Downs in Vinton, La. The Cypress, a seven-furlong race run around two turns, was a prep for the $200,000 Championship on Louisiana Premiere Night on Feb. 5.

Nitro Chip won by 4 1/2 lengths over Sanctuary's Omooni, and it was another half-length back in third to favorite Spritely Walker.

Nitro Chip ($20.40) raced in sixth early in the Cypress, as Cort's P.B. led the field through an opening quarter in 23.44 seconds. Nitro Chip took over at the half-mile point, in 48.08 seconds, and then increased his advantage to the wire, finishing in a time of 1:27.81.

Steve Bourque rode the winner for trainer Sam Breaux. the win was Nitro Chip's seventh from 13 career starts.
