Delta cancels Thursday night card

Email

Delta Downs in Vinton, La., has canceled Thursday night's racing program because of a winter storm moving into the region. Delta is located in southwestern Louisiana.

"We canceled because the weather forecast has freezing rains in it, and the bridges are supposed to ice over," said Chris Warren, the director of racing operations at Delta.

Warren said Delta's track would be closed for training on Friday morning, but the goal is to race Friday night. Saturday night, the track is scheduled to put on its $1 million Louisiana Premiere Night program of Louisiana-bred stakes. It is the second-richest card of the meet at Delta.

Freezing temperatures have gripped much of the Southwest. Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark., was forced to cancel its Thursday and Friday cards this week because of a frozen racing surface. There was no training at the track Wednesday or Thursday.

Sam Houston Race Park in Houston, which is about two hours from Delta, had to close its track for training on Wednesday. The track is next scheduled to race on Friday.

These tracks that have casinos have no interest in the racing. They will close for any reason that could put doubt in anyones minds. Sad to say but the day is coming soon for 50% of the tracks to close. Illinois will be first to go.
