Delosvientos to skip BC Marathon

Delosvientos, who remained unbeaten at 1 1/2 miles with his win in the $97,000 Point Given at Monmouth Park last Sunday, will not advance to the $500,000 Breeders' Cup Marathon for religious reasons, according to trainer Giuseppe Iadisernia.

Iadisernia is a Seventh-day Adventist, a faith that observes Saturday as the Sabbath and a day in which work should be minimal. Iadisernia said he had hoped the Marathon, a 1 1/2-mile race new to the Breeders' Cup, would be part of the Friday card on Oct. 24.

But it is instead on the Saturday program, Oct. 25, and because of its timing, Delosvientos will now be pointed to the Grade 2, $500,000 Clark Handicap at Churchill Downs, Iadisernia said. The Clark, at 1 1/8 miles, is to be run on Friday, Nov. 28.

Delosvientos set a track record in the Point Given, winning the 1 1/2-mile race in 2:31.12. He also has won three other starts at the distance, including the Grade 2 Brooklyn at Belmont Park on June 6. Delosvientos earned a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 107 in the Brooklyn.

Delightful Kiss, who guaranteed himself a spot in the starting gate for the Marathon with his win in the Grade 3 Turfway Park Fall Championship at 1 1/2 miles on Sept. 6, will cut back in distance Saturday for the Grade 3, $200,000 All American Stakes at 1 1/8 miles at Golden Gate Fields.
