Delaware Park: Napravnik booked for return to races

After an absence of three months recuperating from a fractured left wrist that required two surgeries, Rosie Napravnik is ready to resume riding.

Napravnik, 23, is named on five mounts on Saturday’s card at Delaware Park, including three of the four $75,000 stakes for Delaware-bred and Delaware-certified horses.

She has not ridden in a race since July 7, when the 5-year-old mare Nasseb broke down during a five-furlong turf race at Delaware. Napravnik went down in a spill and fractured the same wrist she broke during a riding accident in January 2007 at Laurel Park.

At the time of the injury, Napravnik was leading the Delaware jockey standings with 36 wins. She ranked eighth nationally in wins with 131 and ninth in the country with $4,699,716 in purse money.

Among her 2011 highlights were a win in the Louisiana Derby aboard Pants On Fire. She finished ninth with that 3-year-old in the Kentucky Derby, the best finish by a female rider in the first leg of racing’s Triple Crown.

Last year, Napravnik rode 126 winners to become Delaware’s first female leading rider, then accomplished the same feat at Fair Grounds.
