Delaware Park: Eldaafer gets back in win column in Hanford Memorial
By Mike Farrell
Email
Eldaafer perked up with a return to Delaware Park, easily beating four rivals Saturday in the $51,500 Carl Hanford Memorial.
The 2010 Breeders' Cup Marathon winner, Eldaafer snapped an eight-race losing streak. His most recent prior victory came at Delaware in an allowance race in August, 2011. He is 2-1-0 in 3 starts here.
Eldaafer had been running mostly against high-level company since the last win, including a second-place finish in the Grade 2 Brooklyn Handicap back in June at Belmont Park. The track and the 1 3/16-mile distance suited him perfectly in the Hanford.
Forgotten Knot grabbed the early lead only to be quickly joined by Eldaafer. They raced side by side through leisurely fractions until Eldaafer edged to the front on the final turn.
In command turning for home, Eldaafer finished three lengths better than even-money favorite Not Abroad. Win Willy, the 6-5 second choice, was third.
Eldaafer, a 7-year-old gelding, got his 12th win in 39 starts. Ricardo Santana was aboard for trainer Diane Alvarado as Eldaafer was clocked in 1:58.10. He paid $11 to win as the third choice.
Forgotten Knot was fourth, followed by Special Energy.
Best Bets
MAGNIFCENTMILLION is obviously not today's "best bet" because of his exploits, other than running against Belmont Stakes-bound Giant Finish and allowance winner Glowing Ember last fall; rather, it's more an indictment against the others, along with the fact that the lone special-weight dropper is bred to love any moisture in the track. BROADWAY HAT is third off the bench for meet-leading trainer who saddled four winners Thursday; the half-empty view is he has burned chalk players time and again since last May.
