Delaware Park cancels Wednesday card because of lack of entries

Delaware Park in Wilmington, Del., has canceled its Wednesday race card, citing "insufficient entries," the track said on Tuesday.

The cancelation is the fourth for Delaware Park since its meet began on April 30, including two days lost to Hurricane Irene in late August. Delaware also canceled a card in May when it could not attract enough horses to fill nine races.

Many tracks have had difficulty attracting full fields over the past several years, leading to cuts in racing days. According to Equibase, race dates are down 6.3 percent through August of this year compared with the same time period in 2010.

Delaware races on a four-day per week schedule, with live cards on Saturday, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. The track's purses are heavily subsidized by slot machines.
