Nicole H, capitalizing on a clear path that opened up on the rail, ran down pacesetter Winning Image and snapped a seven-race losing streak in Saturday’s $100,125 Endine Stakes for fillies and mares.
Ridden for the first time by Daniel Centeno, Nicole H ($3.80) sat patiently off fractions of 21.47 and 44.39 seconds set by Winning Image, a 5-year-old mare she had beaten in back-to-back stakes wins at Aqueduct early this season. When Winning Image and Jose Caraballo left room on the rail, Nicole H shot through the gap and took the lead by three-quarters of a length turning for home. Nicole H widened her advantage to as much as 1 1/2 lengths before crossing the wire 1 1/4 lengths in front. The winning time for six furlongs was 1:09.98.
It was Nicole H’s first win since she took the Correction on Feb. 4. Since then, she was second in a pair of Grade 2 stakes and runner-up in the Grade 1 Princess Rooney. Overall, the 5-year-old Nicole H has won 8 of 26 starts and $673,144 for trainer Mike Hushion and owner Gem Inc.
Winning Image, who finished a neck behind Nicole H in the Interborough on New Year’s Day, was second best again in the Endine. Starlite Starbrite finished third at 9-1.
Best Bets
SHE'S STONES SIS stepped forward with first try at this distance three back, dueling the pace and then gamely denying the runnerup while well clear of the rest; fell short trying similar tactics last time but was again well clear in second, and there doesn't appear to be much other speed entered against her here. TAHOE TIGRESS was given a perfect trip and ride and it was just enough to track down 7/5 class-dropper Nuffsaid Nuffsaid last time; owns previous win over a mile.
