Delaware: Delaware Park cancels Wednesday's program due to heat

Intense heat and humidity caused Delaware Park to cancel its live racing card Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service, the heat index for the Wilmington, Del., region is expected to reach 105 degrees this afternoon before thunderstorms move in after 4 p.m.

Delaware Park officials made the decision to cancel for the third time this summer upon the recommendation of the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission Chief Veterinarian Dr. John T. Peters. Peters said racing under such conditions would pose substantial health risks to horses, riders, and participants.

Live racing is expected to resume Thursday.
