Delaware: 'Daisy' surprises at 22-1

Daisy for Rubiano ($46.20), the second-longest shot among nine filly and mare turf sprinters, outbroke the field and proved uncatchable in the $60,600 Slavic Light Stakes at Delaware Park.

Although it was her fifth win in 11 starts on grass - all sprinting - Daisy for Rubiano was facing stakes horses for the first time after clearing her second allowance condition last month.

Ridden by Stewart Elliott for trainer Michael Pino, the 4-year-old Daisy for Rubiano held off a strong late rally by 3-1 second choice Saoirse Cat to prevail by a half-length. Saoirse Cat passed four horses and gained 4 1/2 lengths in the final furlong. Beat the Band was third at 10-1, a half-length in front of Private Indeed, the 5-2 favorite.

The winning time for five furlongs on firm turf was 57.10 seconds.
