Delaware commission investigating possible jockey fight

The Delaware Racing Commission is investigating a possible fight between jockeys Trevor McCarthy and Angel Serpa following the fifth race at Delaware Park last Saturday. A stewards’ hearing is scheduled for Thursday morning.

During the race in question, a $40,000 maiden-claiming race, Serpa was vying for the lead along the inside on the far turn aboard first-time starter Fairbanks Gold when he took up sharply. McCarthy, on Apple Orchard, was racing behind Fairbanks Gold and lost position when that horse dropped back suddenly. Apple Orchard finished fifth, while Fairbanks Gold was last in the eight-horse field.

McCarthy went on to win the Grade 2, $300,000 Delaware Oaks later in the day.

McCarthy was involved in another altercation at Delaware Park on June 23. Trainer Juan Vazquez was deemed to be the aggressor in that fight, which took place near the winner’s circle. Vazquez was suspended 90 days for the incident and directed to attend an anger-management course. He has appealed the penalty.
