SPOT PLAYS AND LIVE LONGSHOTS Del Mar Race 1, (5:05 ET) GOLDEN PRODUCTION (#5, 7-2) 4yo filly has had 11 official workouts since early June, pretty typical of how careful and methodical Ellis tends to be with firsters and comebackers. Has never run a bad one, and stable is looking to turn that ultra-consistency into something even more productive this year; comes well-spotted off in this 1st-level turf allowance. Worth noting the jock (Talamo) has a sub-par Dmr record that obviously isn't indicative of his prowess. - Marty McGee Del Mar Race 2, (5:37 ET) Class-dropping LANGFURS LIGHTNING (#1, 9-2) shows blockbuster drill since last out & can whiz by fading speedsters while turning back from mile to sprint. - Marcus Hersh Del Mar Race 2, (5:37 ET) JUDGE CARR (#7, 5-1) had a troubled trip when fifth against comparable opposition July 27, and can fare better with a smoother run; Bejarano sticks for this one's third start off the bench, and this one shows two local trips since his last race July 27. - Byron King Del Mar Race 3, (6:09 ET) UNKEPT RENDEZVOUS (#5, 3-1) had no chance vs. tougher $12,500 foes here July 28 when she blew the start. She at least kept to her task and passed a few and today she gets a 2-level class drop, Bejarano stays and she's worked twice since. With a better start she can get a stalking trip and roll late. - Michael Hammersly Del Mar Race 5, (7:10 ET) SIR BARCLAY (#9, 5-1) was compromised by a pace duel first out against a stronger 2-year-old field. He drops from state-bred special-weight to state-bred maiden-50 and should move up second time out. SOOO MAJOR is a first-timer bred to win early. - Brad Free Del Mar Race 6, (7:40 ET) FLOATING FEATHER (#3, 5-1) drops from a fast $40k claiming sprint to a state-bred N1X/optional $25k claimer, and can win if he merely reproduces his last. - Brad Free Del Mar Race 6, (7:40 ET) - LIVE LONGSHOT Want a closer in this speed-fest. LIFE A RILEY (#11, 12-1) improved from start 1 to start 2 winning DMR MSW in '12, & similar 2nd-out move gives chance at a price. Positive class hike off 2 recent works & troubled, closing trip. - Marcus Hersh Del Mar Race 8, (8:40 ET) The good comeback by KATEY PIE (#9, 5-1) sets her up for a minor upset against a slow field of maiden-20 fillies and mares. - Brad Free VULNERABLE FAVORITE Del Mar Race 5, (7:10 ET) SONG OF THE TIMES (#5, 3-1) is the ML favorite as a firster and while he's been working along steadily the past few months including some brisk local works it's not as if the works look overwhelming and he hails from a barn whose runners seem to do better AFTER a race or 2. - Michael Hammersly
