Del Mar: Single pick six winner hits for $31,000

DEL MAR, Calif. – For the second straight racing day, a single ticket took down the pick six at Del Mar, with Thursday’s winner receiving $31,947.20. According to Del Mar's mutuels department, the winning ticket was purchased through TwinSpires.com.

The pick six handled just $49,250 on Thursday, as patrons treaded lightly after a blockbuster opening weekend that produced two carryovers and, on Sunday, a single ticket worth $1,041.696.

Under the new rules this meet in the pick six, 70 percent of the pool goes to those with six winners. If no one hits six, that money is carried over in the general pool.

Of the remaining 30 percent, half – 15 percent – is reserved for a single winning pick six ticket, and is referred to as the jackpot carryover. On Thursday, the winning ticket thus took down 85 percent of the pool, after takeout.

The other 15 percent goes to those with 5 of 6 when six winners are hit, or those with the most winners when – as in the first two days of the meet – no one has six.
