Del Mar: Raetodandty's upset has owner/trainer thinking Breeders' Cup

DEL MAR, Calif. - Raetodandty moved closer to a potential start in the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Churchill Downs in November with an upset win in Wednesday’s $105,745 Green Flash Handicap.

Raetodandty ($23) closed from third in the field of eight to win the five-furlong turf race by a neck over Streakin’ Mohican, giving 54-year-old owner-trainer Val Brinkerhoff his first career stakes win. “To win in a place like this makes it special,” the former jockey said.

In coming months, there are two stakes that offer fees-paid berths to the BC Turf Sprint – the Turf Monster Handicap at Parx Racing at Philadelphia Park on Sept. 5 and the $500,000 Nearctic Stakes over six furlongs on turf at Woodbine on Oct. 16. Raetodandty was not nominated to the Turf Monster, leaving the possibility of a trip to Canada, Brinkerhoff said.

“It’s something to think about,” he said.

Brinkerhoff, of St. George, Utah, races primarily at Turf Paradise. Raetodandty, a 4-year-old gelding by Freespool, was Brinkerhoff’s first stakes starter at Del Mar. Bought for $1,300 as a yearling at Barretts in 2008, Raetodandty has won 5 of 12 starts and $226,878.
