A good performance in Saturday's Windy Sands could propel Preamble to next month's Grade 1 Goodwood at Santa Anita.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Preamble’s winning streak has reached four races, a maiden race in February and three allowance races or optional claimers in the spring at Santa Anita and this summer at Del Mar.

If the streak reaches five in Saturday’s $85,000 Windy Sands Handicap over a mile at Del Mar, Preamble will make his graded stakes debut next month.

“We’d be looking at the Goodwood if we win here,” trainer Richard Mandella said of the Grade 1 race at Santa Anita on Oct. 1.

Owned by B. Wayne Hughes, Preamble, 4, returned from a layoff of nearly four months to win a seven-furlong optional claimer here on Aug. 3, overcoming traffic on the turn to win by a head. Two of his previous wins were over a mile and 1 1/16 miles, which gives Mandella confidence that the colt by Mr. Greeley will have no issues with the distance of the Windy Sands.

Preamble has won 4 of 6 starts and $149,440. The Windy Sands will be his stakes debut.

“He’s done what we’ve asked him the last four times,” Mandella said. “He sure finished well the other day going seven furlongs.”

The Windy Sands drew a field of eight and is the sixth race on a 10-race program. Preamble will carry 118 pounds, one less than joint-highweights Kevlar Kid and Chocolate Candy.

Kevlar Kid finished second in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap over 1 1/16 miles on July 30, his stakes debut. He is likely to set the pace from the rail.

Chocolate Candy, fifth in the 2009 Kentucky Derby, has not started since finishing last of 12 after a poor start in the Churchill Downs Stakes on the Kentucky Derby undercard this year.
