Del Mar November stakes schedule worth $2.25M

Some names have changed, but Del Mar’s November race meeting will offer a program of 14 stakes similar to what was offered at Hollywood Park before that track closed last year.

Del Mar announced its stakes schedule, worth $2,250,000, on Wednesday. The race meeting runs from Nov. 7-30 and will include nine graded stakes formerly run at Hollywood Park.

The highlights of the meeting will be during the final days over Thanksgiving weekend, with two Grade 1 turf races worth $300,000 each – the Hollywood Derby at 1 1/8 miles on Nov. 29 and the Matriarch Stakes for fillies and mares over a mile Nov. 30. The purses of both races have been increased by $50,000.

Thanksgiving weekend begins with two Grade 2 turf races worth $250,000 each – the Hollywood Turf Cup on Nov. 27 and the Seabiscuit Handicap at 1 1/16 miles on Nov. 28, a race formerly known as the Citation Handicap.

The names of seven other races have been changed since being moved from Hollywood Park – the Cat’s Cradle Stakes for California-bred female sprinters is now the Betty Grable Stakes; the Hollywood Prevue Stakes for 2-year-old sprinters is the Bob Hope Stakes; the Moccasin Stakes for 2-year-old filly sprinters will be called the Desi Arnaz Stakes; the Beverly Hills Handicap for females on turf is the Red Carpet Stakes; and the On Trust Stakes for California-bred sprinters is now the Cary Grant Stakes.

Two newly named one-mile races for 2-year-olds will be worth $150,000 each, an increase of $50,000 from 2013 – the Jimmy Durante Stakes for fillies, formerly known as the Miesque Stakes, and the Cecil B. DeMille Stakes, formerly known as the Generous.

Why change stakes names that took decades to establish?

They are grasping at straws to try & generate some kind of interest. Let's face it, racing unfortunately is going the same way as boxing...the CORRUPTION in this wonderful sport is beyond repair. Once the tracks obtained a vested interest in who wins a race, the FIX was in. The CHRB, except for Mike Marten, is just a puppet for all of the corruption in racing. The CHRB is suppose to PROTECT the BETTING public, that's why it was created...read their charter's first sentence...... ALL it ever does is cater to the race tracks, how much pay-off money do you think the member receive under the table ???
