BRANNAMAN, a half-bro to G1/G2 SW Sugar Shake and who cost a pretty penny at auction ($500K) may have a long way to go to pay for himself but the 4yo son of Ghostzapper (who they've had to geld) has perked up since that operation and since moving here as he's posted 2 fine efforts here. He's got ample speed to be in the thick of it from the start and a bullet 1:12.60 move here Aug. 22 says he's feeling spry. STORMIN LUTE was a sharp 2nd in his BHP debut May 11 and then after 5 months off came back to blast maiden claimers here Aug. 15 in impressive fashion. Not only did he win well, but Miller saw fit to claim him (19% off a claim) and brings him back in a spot where he can't lose him via another claim. Of course, it's first time vs. winners so that's a big hurdle. TURN ON THE BRITES rallied strongly to just miss when 2nd in a spot similar to this here Aug. 10, beating the top pick in the process. Could be he's peaking and a sharp :47.80 move here Aug. 23 says he's doing well. Closer Looks >>

KRISTO has been much ballyhooed as the $500K son of Distorted Humor has been dazzling in the a.m. for Sadler. He scratched out of what may have been a tougher spot Sunday to go here instead. The works say he's ready to go first out. One of his 2 sibs is winner Icy Connection (4 wins, $87K). ROUNDUPTHELUTE cost $230K at auction and debuts with plenty of strong works for Baffert, who of course is well known for firing first out (23%). He's kin to Beyondallboundarys (3 wins, $135K, SW, G3 SP) and Millionreasonswhy (3 wins, $223K, G2 SW, G2/G3 SP). MELATONIN brings some sharp works into his debut for a trainer (Bonde) who does very well first out (20%). He's bred to be fast being by top sprinter Kodiak Kowboy and his 2 sibs are Caribbean Reign (4 wins, $36K) and Yankee Sovereign (1 win, $232K, in Japan). Closer Looks >>

PEACENIK set a hot pace and stayed on well for 2nd vs. $12,500 foes. That was a nice step forward after a couple dull outings after a long layoff (6 months) so he looks like he's back on track. The 2-level drop doesn't hurt, either. MARINE FOG is the one to beat off 4 straight 2nds including a strong effort here just behind today's foe BEV N BUD Aug. 11. Bonde saw fit to claim him that and gets Bejarano to do the steering. CLASSIC BOBBY takes a significant drop in class for his first start in 2 months. He's worked well of late and returns to a main track over which he's done very nicely (2 for 3). Closer Looks >>

DREAMNOFATTICUS looks primed to break through. After a dull turf route at BHP June 23 he came here, returned to the synthetic main track and sprinting and finished full of run to be a strong 2nd. He's worked strongly twice since including a bullet :34.20 blowout Aug. 23 to indicate he's doing well. ACCOMPLISH has worked splendidly for this first run (bullet :59.20 here Aug. 23). It may be noteworthy, too, that Talamo ends up here instead of riding BRO'S BRO, who he piloted in his last 2 good efforts and who figures one of the major players in here. BRO'S BRO dueled and ran 2nd here July 17 and dueled and ran 3rd as the favorite here (2 3/4 lengths behind DREAMNOFATTICUS). Talamo was aboard for those 2 good outings but ends up on ACCOMPLISH today instead, so read into that what you will. Closer Looks >>

DOMONATION looked spectacular blasting $10K foes here July 31. He's done good work over this track and the way he romped last time hints he's on top of his game. It's also a great sign Chew not only saw fit to claim him last time but now doubles him in value. That speaks of conifidence. MAGIC BEAM, howver, has beaten the top pick the last 2 times they met and he, too, loves it here (3 for 6). He finished full of run to beat more expensive here Aug. 2. BLUE JAY ATTACK was claimed by Ellis (4 for last 12, 33%, off a claim) off a dull turf run at BHP June 15. Ellis has given him plenty of time to regroup and drops him a peg. This runner boasts a super bullet 4f work at BHP Aug. 16 (:47.80) and ran big the only other time he tried this track last year. 6 TURN ON THE PUMPS is sitting on a win. He comes off 5 striaght solid outings (4 2nds, 1 3rd) including a good 2nd in a race just like this here Aug. 3 when he chased hom the highly promising Ethnic Dance. He has some versatility, too. KEEP MOVIN' beat maiden on BHP synthetic July 5 and was claimed by Miller who then asked the horse to come here, face winners for the first time and try turf for the first time July 17. This 5yo overcame those hurdles nicely so he obviously has ability and he's worked well since. He is stuck on the far outside, however. SIZZLIN' JOE finished with good energy on the main track Aug. 16 and moves to turf, which may be his best game. He also gets Bejarano. HOTRADAMUS beat maidens at this trip on this course July 31 and then finished well sprinting on turf at this level here Aug. 16. The move back to this longer game helps. Closer Looks >>

Some promising young gals here. SUNDAY RULES came out smokin' to romp in her debut here Aug. 3, showing high speed and blowing the race open with a powerful furlong run into the lane. That run was flattered, too, as the runner-up came right back to win. Of course, she better be all that because MOVING DESERT is a proven commodity as well. She whipped maidens here July 17 and then faced the boys in the Graduation Stakes here July 31 and was a good 2nd. Moving back in against girls-only has to help.WHATSALLTHEDRAMA was slow into stride in her Aug. 1 debut here, then had traffic issues turning for home but none of it mattered as she powered home to win going away. The Beyer was a tad light compared to the top 2 but obviously there's talent here and she could certainly make the necessary jump with that outing under her belt. Closer Looks >>

J K'S MISCHIEF was a solid 3rd sprinting for $40K at BHP June 21 before setting the pace and fizzling routing at this level here July 19. She moves back to a sprint and that may be what the Dr. ordered. There's a nice 5f work since, too (:59.60). MADDOG MADDIEput up 2 good efforts (3rds) at this level at BHP this spring before tossing in a clunker here July 27. She's worked well since and could rebound. NONNA REESE flashed talent this winter, drops and has worked nicely for her first start in over 5 months. MAGIC NUMBER perked up last time with the move to this level, but all her work so far has come routing - we're sprinting today. Closer Looks >>
