DEL MAR, Calif. - Nearly three years to the day after his first stakes win, John Scott added win in a six-figure race on his favorite track in Saturday's $106,460 Harry Brubaker Stakes at Del Mar.
Ridden by Victor Espinoza, John Scott, 5, held off a late threat from an unlucky Kettle Corn to win the one-mile race by a neck in 1:36.52. Holladay Road finished third in the field of six.
John Scott ($6) raced wide through much of the race. He led by a length with a furlong remaining and was fully extended to win.
"He wants to wait on horses when he makes the lead," Espinoza said. "It was tough today."
Kettle Corn, the winner of the Grade 3 Native Diver Handicap at Hollywood Park last December, raced in traffic in early stretch and closed well to just miss. Kettle Corn was the 9-5 favorite.
"He had every chance to go by that horse," Kettle Corn's jockey, Garrett Gomez, said. "Maybe if I had a little longer to do it, I would have had a better chance."
John Scott and Kettle Corn were second and third in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap here on July 28. Both were mentioned as candidates for the $1 million Pacific Classic on Aug. 26 in the days before the race.
The one-mile Brubaker was John Scott's fourth career start on Del Mar's Polytrack synthetic surface. He has won three times here, including the I'm Smokin Stakes for California-breds here in September, 2009.
Plagued by minor injuries for much of his career, the 5-year-old John Scott returned to racing after a 30-month break earlier this year. The Brubaker was his fifth start of the year and third win.
Owned by John Harris and Scott Gross and trained by Carla Gaines, John Scott has won 5 of 8 starts and $301,304.
Best Bets
SLIGO JOE finished third, fourth, or fifth against classier company in each of his last four races. He ran fast enough in his last two starts to beat this type on the plunge from $10,000 optional claiming into this $5,000 N1Y field. LATCH LIGHTING only finished fifth as the favorite at this class level last time. He should be a factor today, but he seems more likely to contend in the minor exotic slots than he is to beat this field. STEALTH HERO ran a dull race when he beat just one opponent here on a muddy track in his last race.
