Del Mar: John Johny Jak edges Norvsky in Brubaker Stakes

Email

DEL MAR, Calif. - John Johny Jak lost the Wickerr Stakes by a nose in his California debut at Del Mar last month.
He was one notch better in Wednesday’s $99,390 Harry Brubaker Stakes at Del Mar.

With a touch of luck, John Johny Jak won the Brubaker by a nose over Norvsky, who lost the race in a head bob and appeared to lead for a stride before and after the wire. John Johny Jak ($11.20) ran 1 1/16 miles on turf in a quick 1:40.16, a performance that led trainer Kristin Mulhall to say that the Oak Tree Mile at the Santa Anita autumn meeting in October will be considered.

Owned by Kretz Racing, John Johny Jak was bought privately earlier this summer, following a second to Mambo Meister in the Mecke Stakes at Calder on June 25.

A 4-year-old ridgling, John Johny Jak has won 7 of 21 starts and $224,709. The Brubaker Stakes was John Johny Jak’s third win in his last five starts. He won the Carterista Stakes for Florida-breds at Gulfstream Park in April.
