Del Mar internet plays for Monday

This game will drive a bettor crazy.

But if a horseplayer can tolerate long losing streaks, and summon the courage to bet aggressively when the odds are out of whack, there is always a fighting chance.

The 2006 summer meet at Del Mar looked bleak going into the final weekend. But it's funny how one good winner can turn things around.

Sip One for Mom's odds in race 1 Sunday should have been about 6-1. But when Moscow Burning took all the money and started at the ridiculously low price of 1-5, the odds floated higher on every other starter.

Sip One for Mom started at 19.50-1, and she did not have to win. But she did win, by a nose. And the suggested $50 win bet became a $1,025 payday.

It was a nice hit on a huge day. But the cartwheels and high-fives will be postponed, because even after the thousand-dollar score, there is still a deficit to erase.

Chances are, this wagering column will still end the meet in the red. But guess what? The hole is not as deep. The season turned around on one good horse.

Think we can find another?

On to the Monday card.

Race 6

Entourage will get hammered off his tough-trip third less than two weeks ago. He is the horse to beat; his odds will be lower than his program price of 3-1.

Solider (8-1) should improve off an even-paced sprint, and Malt Magic (5-2) has ability but he also is a nut case.

This route race for 2-year-old maidens is a chance for a Kentucky shipper to slip through the cracks. And if Hurricane Alex runs as well as he has worked for new trainer Paddy Gallagher, he might score an upset.

Hurricane Alex finished eighth in his debut at Churchill Downs. That race has turned out to be one of the most productive 2-year-old maiden races of the season anywhere in the country. The 2-3-4-5 finishers all returned to win their next start; two have won stakes (one was disqualified).

Hurricane Alex is bred to run long, and his workouts at Del Mar have impressed private clockers. Best of all, Hurricane Alex is listed at 20-1 in the program. We'll settle for about half that price.

The bet: $30 win Hurricane Alex (minimum odds 9-1); $10 exacta Entourage over Hurricane Alex; $5 exactas Soldier and Malt Magic over Hurricane Alex (same minimum odds on Hurricane Alex).

One play, one price. Back for one final swing on Wednesay, closing day.
