DEL MAR, Calif - Holy Candy, who was pulled up as the favorite in the second division of the Oceanside Stakes on July 18, underwent surgery on Monday to have a bone chip removed from an ankle, trainer John Sadler said.

Holy Candy underwent a battery of tests after the Oceanside that revealed the injury. Holy Candy is expected to be away from racing until early next year.
“They said it went well,” Sadler said. “I don’t know if we’ll make early 2013, but it will be next winter.”
Owned by breeder Jenny Craig and Donkey Island Racing Stable, Holy Candy has won 1 of 7 starts and $114,500. By Candy Ride, Holy Candy was fourth in the Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland last April.
