Del Mar: Hollendorfer closing in on 6,000th win

DEL MAR, Calif. – Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer is within two victories of the 6,000th of his career, and he has a chance to reach that milestone with three starters at Del Mar on Wednesday.

Hollendorfer, 65, is on the verge of becoming the fourth trainer in history to win 6,000 or more races, joining Dale Baird (9,445), Jack Van Berg (6,406), and King Leatherbury (6,324) in that elite group.

Wednesday, Hollendorfer starts Tales in Excess in an optional claimer over five furlongs on turf in the sixth race and has two fillies in the seventh race, $100,000 Generous Portion Stakes – Lookin for Jonesy and Roar Baby Roar.

Roar Baby Roar was third in the CTBA Stakes at Del Mar on July 22. On July 31, Lookin for Jonesy overcame a poor start to win a maiden race in her debut over 5 1/2 furlongs.

The ability she displayed did not surprise Hollendorfer, but the style of her maiden win did.

“When you have a problem here, you usually can’t recover from it,” Hollendorfer said on Sunday. “We were hoping she could do that. I think it would be better to run in this race.”

Hollendorfer is more than ready to reach the milestone. His last winner was Ironmann at Golden Gate Fields on Aug. 21, one of four winners for the stable that day. He has 24 starters since then at Del Mar and Golden Gate Fields, with three seconds and six third-place finishers during that span.
