DEL MAR, Calif. -- The Brazilian import Great Hot ran down odds-on favorite Sugarinthemorning in the final strides to take the $100,000 Torrey Pines Stakes for 3-year-old fillies on Sunday at Del Mar.

Great Hot ($7.60), the second choice in the field of six, stalked the pace throughout and closed resolutely to wear down Sugarinthemorning, who was attempting two turns for the first time. Great Hot prevailed by three-quarters of a length, with Cathy’s Crunches another three-quarters of a length back in third.

Great Hot completed one mile on Polytrack in 1:35.88, and she gave jockey Chantal Sutherland her first stakes win at Del Mar. Great Hot is trained by A.C. Avila, for whom she has raced four times. She came to Avila after winning her debut in her native land last October. Great Hot was bred and is owned by Coudelaria Jessica, a farm owned by Brazilian Luiz Fernando Dannemann.

Sugarinthemorning was coming off a win in the seven-furlong Fleet Treat Stakes here on July 30 and was going for her third straight victory. But she had never been farther than seven furlongs, and she could not quite handle the final furlong in the Torrey Pines.
