There is an increasing likelihood that divisions of the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby will be run Sept. 1.

Of the 34 nominations, approximately 19 were considered probable starters as of Saturday – Chief Havoc, Dice Flavor, Dorsett, Dry Summer, Ethnic Dance, Examen, Gabriel Charles, Gervinho, Infinite Magic, Kid Dreams, No Jet Lag, Olympic Blue, Outside Nashville, Play It Loud, Procurement, Pure Loyalty, Redwood Kitten, Rising Legend, and Tom’s Tribute.

The Del Mar Derby is run over 1  1/8 miles on turf and has an advertised purse of $300,000. Because of its narrow turf course, Del Mar can run a maximum of 10 horses at that distance.

Director of racing Tom Robbins said Saturday that divisions of the Del Mar Derby would likely have a purse of $250,000, depending on available purse funds. He said a final decision will be made after consultation with other track officials and the Thoroughbred Owners of California, who must agree to changes in purses.

The race must have a minimum purse of $225,000 to maintain its status as a Grade 2.

The track is having better-than-expected business at the current meeting, providing excess purse funds to divide the race.
