Del Mar: Debutante field in flux

Killer Graces, winner of the Landaluce, was sixth in the Sorrento.

The first three finishers of the Grade 3 Sorrento Stakes on Aug. 5 will probably be absent from the $250,000 Del Mar Debutante over seven furlongs on Saturday.

Race winner Mighty Caroline has been retired because of injury and will be bred next year. River Kiss and Heleonor Rugby, who were second and third, are entered in Wednesday’s Generous Portion Stakes for statebreds.

Without them, the role of favorite could go to Weemissfrankie or Dreamcaster, the winners of maiden races in their career debuts on July 20 or Aug. 7. There is one stakes winner in the field in Killer Graces, who won the Landaluce Stakes but finished a troubled sixth in the Sorrento after a poor start.

Other expected starters are Coup de Coeur, Emerald Gold, Evelyn’s Dancer, Self Preservation, Silent Saga, and Woebegon.
