Del Mar: Celestial Kitten taking it easy in Oaks preparation

Celestial Kitten ran third in the San Clemente after shipping west to her new barn.

DEL MAR, Calif. - Celestial Kitten had a hectic few weeks in mid-July, shipping from New York to California after a private purchase and finishing third in the Grade 2 San Clemente Handicap. Her preparation for Saturday’s $250,000 Del Mar Oaks has been much quieter.

“She was bought the week before, and shipped out,” trainer Ben Cecil said of last month’s activities. “I thought she ran well, all things considered.

Cecil does not plan a workout for Celestial Kitten this week, preferring to gallop the filly into the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks, run over 1 1/8 miles on turf

“I might not work her again,” Cecil said. “She came out here skinny, and she doesn’t need a lot of training.”

Cecil said the distance “should suit” Celestial Kitten, who races for Triple B Farm. “I’ll be happy with a placing, but I’d like to win,” Cecil said.

The top contenders for the Del Mar Oaks are Nereid and Cambina, who finished in a dead heat for first in the American Oaks at Hollywood Park last month; and Up In Time, the winner of the San Clemente Handicap here on July 24.
