Del Mar boosts purses of two turf stakes

Del Mar is offering a 43-race stakes program for its summer meeting that is similar to last year’s, with a slightly lower overall value.

The summer meeting, from July 16 through Sept. 7, has stakes worth $7,950,000, a decline of $100,000 from last year. The track has increased purses for two leading turf stakes, cut the purses of three graded stakes by $50,000 each, and reduced purses of 10 overnight stakes from $90,000 to $80,000.

The Grade 1 Eddie Read Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf July 18 will be worth $400,000, an increase of $100,000 from last year, while the Del Mar Handicap at 1 3/8 miles on turf Aug. 22 will be worth $250,000, a gain of $50,000 from 2014. The meeting’s richest race, the $1 million Pacific Classic, will be run Aug. 22, the first time the race has been run on a Saturday since 2010.

The graded stakes with lower purses are the $100,000 Rancho Bernardo Stakes for female sprinters Aug. 16, the $200,000 Del Mar Mile on turf Aug. 23, and the $250,000 Del Mar Derby on turf Sept. 6.

Five races are part of the Breeders’ Cup Win and You’re In program, offering fees-paid berths to BC races at Keeneland on Oct. 30 and 31 to horses nominated for the Breeders’ Cup program. The Win and You’re In races are the Bing Crosby Stakes (BC Sprint), Clement Hirsch Stakes (Distaff), Pat O’Brien Stakes (Dirt Mile), Del Mar Handicap (Turf) and Pacific Classic (Classic).

This year’s summer meeting, to be run on a newly installed dirt track that replaces a synthetic main track, will end on Labor Day.
