Jockey Chris DeCarlo hopes to return to riding this weekend after escaping serious injuries in an ugly-looking spill Saturday at Aqueduct.

On Monday, DeCarlo said he had soreness in his left calf and in his lower back but structurally there was no other damage from the incident, which occurred in the sixth race when his mount, Enchanteresse, appeared to clip heels with the pacesetting Sycee entering the far turn of a second-level turf allowance race.

Enchanteresse stumbled, unseating DeCarlo, who said one of those horses stepped on the lower part of his left leg between his calf muscle and the Achilles tendon. DeCarlo said he also was kicked in his lower back.

“Other than that, I’m fine by God’s grace,” DeCarlo said.

DeCarlo said Monday that the lower part of his calf “is really, really sore.”

“I can’t put any weight on it,” he said.

DeCarlo said that he had a doctor’s appointment Tuesday and will have a better idea of when he could return after that. He hopes to ride Saturday.

“I have to be able to put weight on my calf,” DeCarlo said. “I need that part of my leg. That’s basically where all of our weight goes.”
