Debbie Sue seeks repeat in Brookmeade

Email

Debbie Sue upset last year's Brookmeade Stakes at 17-1 when she came off a 7 1/2-month layoff. She's the 5-2 morning line favorite this time in the $60,000 stakes, restricted to Virginia-bred and Virginia-sired fillies and mares, at 1 1/16 miles on the inner turf course at Colonial Downs.

Now 6, Debbie Sue will be making just her second start since January and her first on the grass since last October. The last time she went dirt to turf following a break of about a month, Debbie Sue decisively won the Maryland Million Ladies at Laurel Park.

The dangerous speed on the stretch out to a route is Changeisgonnacome, a 3-year-old who is cross-entered in Delaware's Denise Rhudy. If she runs in this spot, Changeisgonnacome will be taking on older horses for the first time.

Top Time may be the live longshot at 8-1. She comes back just 11 days after she was off the board as the 3-2 favorite in a first-level allowance locally. In four turf starts where she has come back within 14 days, Top Time has two wins, both at Colonial Downs last season, and a pair of seconds.
